Insurance Requirements
Draft v0.1 · July 2026
Onboarding must capture the correct insurance posture for each Worker based on classification, present the required acknowledgements, and collect proof of coverage where the law or the client requires it. This protects the Platform, the client, and the Worker.
1. Purpose
Insurance requirements on Sonny depend on how a Worker is classified. Each classification carries its own obligations, acknowledgements, and, where applicable, proof-of-coverage requirements.
2. Independent contractors and freelancers
- Responsible for maintaining their own insurance appropriate to the work performed.
- Must affirmatively acknowledge this responsibility during onboarding.
- Proof of coverage upload may be required for specific gig types.
3. Companies and staffing agencies
- Must provide proof of Workers' Compensation insurance where applicable under governing law.
- Must upload a valid certificate of insurance and keep it current.
- Access to gigs for their sponsored workers may be suspended if coverage lapses or cannot be verified.
4. Sole proprietors
- Where legally appropriate, may acknowledge a waiver in lieu of carrying Workers' Compensation on themselves.
- Must attest that the waiver is valid in the jurisdiction where work is performed.
- Remain responsible for any other insurance required for the specific work.
5. Onboarding acknowledgements
The following acknowledgements are presented during onboarding. Each requires an explicit, logged affirmative action: a checkbox plus timestamp. Boxes are never pre-checked.
I understand that insurance requirements depend on how I am classified on Sonny. I confirm that the classification I have selected is accurate, and I agree to meet the insurance obligations that apply to that classification.
I understand that as an independent contractor or freelancer, I am solely responsible for obtaining and maintaining my own insurance appropriate to the work I perform. Sonny does not provide insurance coverage for me. I agree to keep my coverage current where required.
On behalf of my company, I confirm that we carry Workers' Compensation insurance where required by law for the workers we sponsor on Sonny. I agree to upload a valid certificate of insurance and to keep it current. I understand that access may be suspended if our coverage lapses or cannot be verified.
I am a sole proprietor. I understand I may elect a waiver in place of carrying Workers' Compensation coverage on myself only where this is permitted by law in the jurisdiction where I perform work. I confirm that this waiver is valid for me, and I accept responsibility for any consequences of electing it. I understand I remain responsible for any other insurance required for the work I perform.
6. Proof of insurance upload
- Accepted formats: PDF, JPG, PNG.
- Captured at minimum: insured name, carrier, policy number, coverage type, effective date, and expiration date.
- Documents expiring within 30 days are flagged and prompt for renewal.
- Stored securely with access restricted to admin and verification roles.
- The admin dashboard supports review, approval, or rejection with a reason.
7. Verification and enforcement
- Where proof is required, the Worker or sponsoring entity cannot accept applicable gigs until a valid document is on file.
- Expired or rejected coverage triggers suspension of applicable gig access until resolved.
- Sonny's acceptance of a document does not warrant that coverage is adequate or valid; it confirms only that a document was received and reviewed.
8. Logging and recordkeeping
Every acknowledgement is logged with the user identity, the exact text version shown, and a timestamp. Records are retained per the Platform retention policy.
